Well from recent news articles circulating about, India and China want it that way for anything that falls into the category of clean technology. For one, they think it is up to the larger more industrialized countries to support the smaller less industrialized countries. The US and other countries feel that doing this could really stunt the growth of the industry.

Imagine a company coming up with an amazing way to patent wind powers, say it could revolutionize the industry, yet they cannot get patent on it. Many companies look to getting a patent on their ideas. This can be really important for business. For example, they might want to be the only one in an industry with a certain technology so it really sets them apart.

Sometimes businesses also invest quite a bit of money into the research of new technologies. If those technologies can be easily duplicated because they are not patent worthy, then their chances of getting their money back could become difficult.

So everyone wants to see a cleaner planet, but to say companies cannot patent their clean technological advances may be way off mark.
