The internet can be a great place to do research chat with other inventors, or just browse while looking for your next and latest great invention. This can have some pros and cons to it though. The cons may be that you never know who you are chatting with. The person on the end of the PC line may be a thief or an imposter. Next, what if the info you are reading is inaccurate.

It can be good though to search out things like your next idea. You may be able to quickly determine if your idea is new or if someone else has already filed a patent on it or not. The US government has a good patent website. This can be a good place to browse to help you better understand the patent process. No matter what, like anything, take great care in what you do.

It happens more often than not that someone gets a brilliant idea and immediately they file for a patent. Sure, it may be a wise idea to protect that idea, yet you may want to consider planning ahead prior to just running out and filing for one.

First, you may want to search around before you spend the money applying for a patent and make sure someone has not already beat you to it. Filing for a patent can cost quite a bit of money depending on how you do it. Next, make sure you have somewhat of a plan as to what you will do it if gets approved or does not get approved.

Consider researching all of the aspects of filing for a patent. If you do not, it could cost you dearly in the end in various ways. Sitting down and setting some goals and making some plans while you research everything involved can make you that much more educated. In the end, having a plan usually will always make more sense than not having one. No matter what you think about your idea, you may want to ensure that you have all of you ducks in a row prior to rushing off and doing something you may regret later.

So how do people do it? How do they find out what the next and latest technologies to hit the market will be? Many times by the patent that is filed. If a patent has been filed well in advance and approved for certain products before they are launched, then by doing a search of the latest patents filed you may discover some possible up and coming products. For example, Nokia has an exciting product that may be soon to hit the market here. They have filed a patent for the self charging cell phone. Something like this could certainly revolutionize the cell phone industry. Businesses can use this information for preparations for these types of products to hit the markets. New agencies love this in that they can talk about the news of the product well before it is launched. Once the patent has been approved and logged onto the US patent search system, it seems that everyone could know about the prospects that a new product is coming. So if you plan on filing and getting a patent on something, assume that it may be out there for the world to see. It is nice, however, that the patent does give you protection of the rights of your invention.

When you end up filing a patent, it can be good to review some of the past filings people have done with similar products or ideas. This can be an important step to help you make sure that you are not wasting time filing for a patent on a product that has been already applied for. If someone has the same idea then what would be the point of you trying for the same thing. If the patent you find is close to your idea or similar then it is up to you if you want to try for one or not.

If you are filling out the patent application yourself, it can be a good idea to review similar submissions to help you to fill your forms out properly. It can really help you with figuring out how to do drawings and diagrams as well. Many people try filling out applications themselves due to the cost of patent attorneys. It is up to each person to determine if it is worth it for them to pay for help or not. The help can get quite costly depending on the size of your submission. So do your research and have fun.

So I did a test on a patent search, an idea I had, but never really had time to try out. So I figured what a great time to check out the US Patent website. The first thing I did was checked out the internet for my idea.

I went to Google, I typed in several keyword search combos of my idea to see if there were any similar ideas out there like it. I did find some gadgets that did what mine would do essentially, but theirs hade to be replaced every week or so. The point to mine is no replacing, only add a solution you can do from home and that is it. Plus I noticed some of these gadgets had no patent.

Last I went to the US Patent website, and then did my search which is free. I typed in the keywords that made sense and found a device that was no where near the same as mine.

So this search turned out well for me.

You may want to make sure you do a thorough search when looking for similar products already on the market that may match yours. No matter what, try and have fun…

Now you have an idea for a great product. An idea though without action is nothing more than just that. If you want to realize that idea, it is going to take a ton of work. But that work can also be fun and rewarding. So give it a try, you have little to lose and much to gain.

So where do you start? Well here are some suggestions, and these are just that, suggestions.

You will first want to start by writing down your idea on paper, getting as much detail down as possible. Then start some research. Search Google for products that may be like yours. Just type in the description of your product to see what’s out there. If you find nothing, then great, you can move on to the next step. That would be to do a patent search to make sure someone has not filed a patent on your idea. If you do not see anything like it, then that is great.

Next you will want to file your patent if you’re ready to move forward. Then you can go out and look for manufacturers to get a prototype. Now keep in mind, let’s say you will end up selling your item for $10, the prototype will cost lots more. Molds may have to be designed or tools made to make it. From there you possibly need help marketing your idea. And do not forget to get a website; it is a must for doing business today.

What is the best way to search for a patent? Well first you could start at the US Patent Website to use their search tool. But you won’t probably want to stop there. Getting a patent can be a very serious thing. It should not be taken lightly, no matter what your invention is. You need to really spend the time to understand what it is you’re doing.

You will want to next, after doing a basic patent search on the US Patent Website, head out to a search engine and begin searching. Let’s say that you have invented a new curling iron that is solar powered. In your search engine inquiry, type in the words ’solar powered curling iron’ and see what comes up. The internet is full of information. There are tons of websites on the web that may end up having information regarding your invention. You never know what to you sounds like a great and new idea, may turn out to be someone else’s invention.

The key in your search is to spend quite a bit of time making sure your ideas are new. Check out businesses and websites that seem to have something close to what you have invented. Make sure your idea, well- is just that, your idea.

You know I thought I had a great idea, a great invention. I did some patent searches to make sure nobody else had taken my idea. Did more and more research and finally said I am ready to go for it. So after nearly a year of working my tail end off and getting my product to market, I find out through a very nasty letter from an attorney that I had stolen someone else’s idea. What!? You’ve go to be kidding me.

Think this can’t happen to you? We see articles like this one, click here, that companies or individuals are suing others for taking their ideas. What drives me nuts about the whole deal is the person that filed the patent had no intentions of doing anything with their idea; they just wanted to patent it!

What would be done? How could this have been avoided? Well first off my patent search must have gone in the wrong direction at some point. I really feel like I should have seen this. But hence I did not. This may be a good place to hire a patent lawyer. They will do an exhaustive search of the system to make sure that your idea, although yours had not been imagined by someone else.

After that you should be well on your way to realizing your idea! Do the homework and you won’t end up being used.

Patent Search

If you are the creative type you are likely always coming up with new ideas. The most valuable of such ideas will come when you encounter a real problem you or someone else has and when such a problem does not have a readily available solution. If you can find a solution to such a problem then it can be very valuable because people are willing to pay money for problems they have that have no easy solution. If you come up with such an idea you will likely realize it pretty quickly. When this happens though you will need to ensure you protect your idea. Others trying to make money if you do not adequately protect and defend your ideas will quickly copy these ideas. The way you protect an idea is via a patent. The important thing about a patent is that it protects your idea so that others can’t unfairly profit from your idea. When looking to take out a patent the very first thing you need to do is a patent search. A patent law firm will help you with this as well as all of the other steps in obtaining a patent. A patent search will help you find out if anyone else has previously come up with this idea.
