Having Something Built

Sure you may be a great inventor, but you are not a mastermind at everything. At some point in your process of inventing something, you may get to the place where you need help having a part or parts made. These are usually called prototypes. Prototypes are parts that basically are first production sets. They may be a bit crude looking but essentially will still fit into place and do the job for testing purposes.

You may need a plastics extrusion facility to do some work, or perhaps a sheet metal shop to press something out for you. Either way, this may be a necessary part of your invention. Keep in mind that sometimes it is hard for you to do everything yourself.

Idea Manufacturing

Sometimes having an idea and having it all drawn out on paper for some people is just not enough. Sometimes you need to see your idea in the flesh you could say before you know whether or not it is time to take it to the next level. Some ways to go about this may be to try and build a prototype yourself. Certainly this would all depend on what you are building and can it realistically be done. If not, you can consider outsourcing it to various manufacturing facilities. Doing so can cost money, usually prototypes of products can cost a great deal. It really all depends on what you’re doing and who is doing it.

So before you rush out and have your prototype done in any fashion, spend some time researching all your options first.

Help With An Invention

Now that you think your invention can hold water and make it to the consumer market, you have to consider how you’re going to go about doing this. The first step is taking your invention or idea and producing the first prototype. This can be tricky depending on what you have invented. There are so many rules and regulations to certain product types and within certain markets.

For example, if you were going to invent a child safety seat, the cost would be huge. You would need a company to help you out here. Unless this was your full time job and you had experience within this market.

Now let’s say you invented a new coaster to set drinks on. The testing required here would be minimal. You can now search out a place to manufacture your first coaster. Now of course there are places that can do this for you, and let me tell you it will not be cheap! But this is something you can attempt on your own. You will first need a CAD drawing of the items and a list of materials it takes to make it.

Next you begin the search for someone that can make the first one, however do keep in mind prototypes can cost quite a bit of money depending on what it is. But once your product has been made, you can now shop the idea to potential sellers, and then find a full time manufacturer.

Now these are just some very basic steps to all this, don’t forget this process takes time and money no matter what route you go. Also know your rights, maybe consulting with a lawyer experienced in this field; they may even have free information available.
