Patents are not a new thing. The idea has been around since as early as 500 BC. Back then people were encouraged to come up with new ideas, new luxuries if you will for living. If they did come up with an idea they were given about 1 year to sell and market their goods without having to deal with competitors. At that point, after one year, the patent ran out and everyone was free to sell that person’s invention if they wanted to.

These ideas of the patent then have been used throughout time. Different countries of course have different systems. But overall the basic concepts of someone coming up with an idea and having the rights to it for a certain amount of time have been lingering on through history.

Now the patent system has surely grown. Patents can even take years to get and in lots of cases people are unable to even get one. Maybe their patent is too close to another or the idea did not fall under what is patentable. No matter what, the system has been used throughout time. As far back in history that has been recorded, people have used a very similar system.

Well if you know anything about patents at all, you know that getting one can at times be quite difficult. Patents can be a good way to protect an idea or invention you have though. It can be good to protect that idea from thieves, companies trying to duplicate what you want to do, or maybe you just want to protect the idea until you’re ready to market it, etc.

Have you ever just gone to Google and typed in the word patent to see what results come up? One of the first things that you may notice is there are lots of ads. These companies are more than likely paying a pretty good premium to have their pages come up number one in the Google search. Click on one of those sites and it just cost that business some money. But for them it seems it is worth it to have their ads out there.

The next thing you will more than likely see is Wikipedia. That site seems to come up quite often when you do a search for just about anything. There you can usually get some good information on the topic you choose. It can be a good place to start when researching something before moving on.

Could you imagine an industry where you could not file for a patent? Well from recent news articles circulating about, India and China want it that way for anything that falls into the category of clean technology. For one, they think it is up to the larger more industrialized countries to support the smaller less industrialized countries. The US and other countries feel that doing this could really stunt the growth of the industry.

Imagine a company coming up with an amazing way to patent wind powers, say it could revolutionize the industry, yet they cannot get patent on it. Many companies look to getting a patent on their ideas. This can be really important for business. For example, they might want to be the only one in an industry with a certain technology so it really sets them apart.

Sometimes businesses also invest quite a bit of money into the research of new technologies. If those technologies can be easily duplicated because they are not patent worthy, then their chances of getting their money back could become difficult.

So everyone wants to see a cleaner planet, but to say companies cannot patent their clean technological advances may be way off mark.

Basically if someone has a way to do a shipping cart system for a website, they can technically patent the process if it gets approved because it involves tying it into a machine, which in this case is the PC. Normally under typical circumstances, the example they use was that Ford could not patent the assembly line and they did not. They are likening the software and PC argument to just that.

Most people have always thought it was a tough thing to deal with, giving patents out for methods used on an online businesses website for example. A ruling against the tech company could prove to be a huge issue for future companies when trying to file a patent for methodology style ideas.

What does all this mean? Depending on who you are, it can mean quite a bit. Imagine the drop in business for attorneys that deal specifically in web type patent infringement cases. Also web businesses may not be able to patent certain ways of doing business any longer.

So keep an eye out on this case, it really could change things.

Have you ever wondered if there could possibly be anything left in this world that needs an invention? It sure seems so what with large companies coming up with new ways to do what it is they do. They usually seek for ways to do tasks cheaper, faster and sometimes with less manpower than before. These businesses can even have large facilities dedicated to inventing new technologies and products.

These businesses will also use test markets to study how a new product may work in a new area. They will get certain people groups together in a controlled environment and test products out on them before they release them for production or even further testing.

But to say there is nothing left in the world to invent is not so. Of course there may be some industries no longer really exist or perhaps they have very little to improve upon. But there are always new industries emerging, like solar power for example. Companies in this industry are racing to come up with better solar technologies. It is relatively a new industry and has much room for improvement.

As far as individuals go, there is still room for new ideas and improvements. There are tons of new products that hit the market annually. So if you have an inventor’s spirit, consider not giving up and getting your idea rolling.

It seems when you think of a patent you think of something tangible. Tangible being something you can touch, put your finger on, etc. Here is an interesting article about the Supreme Court questioning the practice of being able to patent methods of doing business. Can you imagine that? If someone were to come up with a way, for example, to process a credit card in a unique way, they can apparently patent that. The deal seems to be that even though it is a method, which is usually not valid for a patent, once you transfer the idea into say some software on a PC, then it seems it can then become a patent.

Imagine that in the business world. It could really take the online/internet world by storm and apparently already has some. Facebook has already faced several law suits from companies claiming they have stolen methods of how they operate online. AMAZING.

So what do you think? Do you think that it’s OK to patent ways to do business or operate? It does seem that a rule like this can really cause a mess when it comes to patent infringement lawsuits. Certain types of business owners are probably thinking twice before they jump into certain markets due to this ruling.

So how do you know when your idea to reinvent something or invent something totally new is a really good idea? Well, for some people they will only find out once they actually try to produce what it is that has been swimming around in their heads or scratched down on multiple sheets of paper. Sometimes in our heads we tend to think we have brilliant ideas. At some point or another in most our lives we think we have a better way to make something or we may even think we have a great product to share with the world that nobody has ever seen before.

Well maybe that’s true. But very few people actually get up the nerve to take their ideas to the next level. That next level can be them trying to actually reproduce or transform that idea into actual reality.

Of course sometimes this can be difficult. At times you may have to bring in outside help to get the product off the ground. So if you have an idea swirling around inside of that head of yours, it is up to you and only you whether or not you can make it come to life.
