Responsible Online Businesses
A responsible online business can be sometimes hard to find. The internet is an attraction for those who do business in a dishonest way.
So what does a responsible online business look like? First thing- businesses that are good will usually not hide their contact information. It’s nice to see a business list their contact information such as a business address and phone number.
It is also important to see if they have been in business for quite awhile. This is not a must though, there are good companies out there that have just started up, but the key here would be to make sure you do a little investigation to who owns and operates the business.
Businesses that seem more honest are often listed with the Better Business Bureau, can be found in the Yellow pages, are registered with the local chamber of commerce in their area, or have applied for net security certificates.
Depending on the type of business you want to find, like a Dallas mortgage broker or a Maine OUI attorney, you will need to do your investigation based on different criteria. With some professions for example, they may have to be a part of a larger overseeing organization.
So do your homework. Never be afraid to call the company and ask questions!
Why All The Patent Law Suits
What is the deal with all the patent law suits? Companies are constantly suing each other. Head to www.Google.com, go to the news area, and then type in patent suit. Daily you will basically see that people are suing each other left and right.
First problem is that people can get a patent for just about anything today. It’s actually scary what people can file patents on. So beware if you think you have a great idea and you want to try and turn it into a reality, hire a patent lawyer to search this out for you. If you miss something, a lawsuit could ensue later.
Also, people to me are sue happy. If any little thing happens we are suing someone over it. Don’t get me wrong, protecting your idea is a good thing, there are a ton of thieves out there. Nevertheless, people do tend to let the emotions take over and run out, hire the first lawyer they find, and then they are off to sue whomever it is they think stole their idea.
These are just a couple of reasons that there are so many law suits. I am sure if you thought it through you would find some yourself
Help, I’m Being Sued
You know I thought I had a great idea, a great invention. I did some patent searches to make sure nobody else had taken my idea. Did more and more research and finally said I am ready to go for it. So after nearly a year of working my tail end off and getting my product to market, I find out through a very nasty letter from an attorney that I had stolen someone else’s idea. What!? You’ve go to be kidding me.
Think this can’t happen to you? We see articles like this one, click here, that companies or individuals are suing others for taking their ideas. What drives me nuts about the whole deal is the person that filed the patent had no intentions of doing anything with their idea; they just wanted to patent it!
What would be done? How could this have been avoided? Well first off my patent search must have gone in the wrong direction at some point. I really feel like I should have seen this. But hence I did not. This may be a good place to hire a patent lawyer. They will do an exhaustive search of the system to make sure that your idea, although yours had not been imagined by someone else.
After that you should be well on your way to realizing your idea! Do the homework and you won’t end up being used.
Help With An Invention
Now that you think your invention can hold water and make it to the consumer market, you have to consider how you’re going to go about doing this. The first step is taking your invention or idea and producing the first prototype. This can be tricky depending on what you have invented. There are so many rules and regulations to certain product types and within certain markets.
For example, if you were going to invent a child safety seat, the cost would be huge. You would need a company to help you out here. Unless this was your full time job and you had experience within this market.
Now let’s say you invented a new coaster to set drinks on. The testing required here would be minimal. You can now search out a place to manufacture your first coaster. Now of course there are places that can do this for you, and let me tell you it will not be cheap! But this is something you can attempt on your own. You will first need a CAD drawing of the items and a list of materials it takes to make it.
Next you begin the search for someone that can make the first one, however do keep in mind prototypes can cost quite a bit of money depending on what it is. But once your product has been made, you can now shop the idea to potential sellers, and then find a full time manufacturer.
Now these are just some very basic steps to all this, don’t forget this process takes time and money no matter what route you go. Also know your rights, maybe consulting with a lawyer experienced in this field; they may even have free information available.
I’ve Got A Great Invention, What Do I Do Next?
Funny, I bet most of us out there have tried to come up with an invention or two. I know I surely have. Not that I really wanted to become a great inventor, I just really think by using items or doing certain tasks I had a tool that would make it a ton easier!
My wife’s brother for example had a couple of great ideas, never would tell anyone and never tried to get it to market. Literally years later, they popped up in magazines and on a home shopping show. He was completely sick.
So what should happen next if you think you have a great idea to bring to market? First read this article. It will help you to understand just exactly what a patent is.
Next, without telling anyone your idea, you need to get the initial design done as well as sourcing out some places to do your first prototype. If you the think you can handle the costs to get this rolling, you need to then file for a patent. Do not let this idea out of the bag until you have protected it.
Many small inventors have done just this and, poof, without a second thought someone steals the idea to use as their own!
So trust nobody, research some costs, and then protect the idea with a patent.
Small Businesses Filing For More And More Patents
Recently it has been reported that more and more small businesses are filing for patents. Why?
Well for one, corporations are constantly filing for patents. Soon basically corporations will own just about everything in the world so to speak. While the number of filings for patents annually has declined by corporations, the numbers are still very steady. It is nice though say if you’re a Maine OUI lawyer or even a hair stylist that nobody can patent how you do your job, well not yet anyway.
Next, it seems small businesses are very tired of having their ideas taken. If you do not protect an idea, then someone could come along and take it very easily. Since the cost of a patent is not all that costly, then filing for one if you truly have a great idea or invention is not a difficult thing to do.
The most important thing to filing a patent for a small business is making sure that you do protect what is naturally yours. Never enter the market place without a patent or without it at least pending. Doing so could be disastrous.
I think small businesses are filing for patents in record numbers because they have seen too many corporation or larger businesses come in and take the smaller businesses idea. You have a way to protect your ideas, use it.
